The Mill Valley Jaguars' strength and conditioning program is renowned for its emphasis on speed and agility. One drill that has proven particularly effective for their 5A-level K players is the 'L-Cone Weave.' This drill targets quick change of direction and acceleration, essential skills for defensive linemen in the high-scoring world of 5A football. The setup: 3 L-cones spaced 5 yards apart. Players start at cone 1, weave through cones 2 and 3, then backpedal to cone 1. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues: 'Keep your eyes up, stay low, and explode out of the cone.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a player's ability to rapidly change direction and accelerate off the line of scrimmage, making them a more effective pass rusher and run defender.
