Fire Up Your Linebackers: The 'Pillar Drill' for 6A Powerhouses
As the 2026 season approaches, 6A programs like Lawrence Free State Firebirds are fine-tuning their linebacker corps. One effective drill to enhance their performance is the 'Pillar Drill'. This exercise targets agility, quickness, and tackling technique. Set up four cones in a square formation, with each cone 5 yards apart. Linebackers start at one corner, then weave through the cones, focusing on proper footwork and body positioning. After completing a lap, they immediately transition into a tackling drill, using a focus pad or sled as the target. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'stay low', 'keep your head up', and 'drive through the target'. This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, agility, and tackling efficiency.
