Shut Down the Edge: A 5A S Player Drill for Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles
To prepare S players for the high-speed, physical battles in 5A football, we're introducing the 'Shut Down the Edge' drill. This drill focuses on developing the speed, agility, and tackling skills necessary to stop opposing ball carriers at the point of attack. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps: 1) S players start in a 3-point stance, 2) Coach tosses a ball 10 yards downfield, 3) S player sprints to the ball, 4) Upon arrival, S player makes a tackle on a blocking sled or teammate. Coaching cues: 'Stay low, stay fast, and finish the play.' This drill translates to game performance by improving S players' ability to quickly close the gap and make tackles in space, ultimately shutting down the edge and limiting opponent's yards after contact.
