FridayNightPulse: Power Rush Drill for 6A Defensive Ends

๐Ÿ“ St. Xavier TigersยทThursday, July 23, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For 6A programs like St. Xavier Tigers, dominating defensive lines are crucial to success. One drill that can help defensive ends (DEs) improve their power rush is the 'Power Rush Drill.' This drill focuses on building explosive power and speed off the edge. To run the drill, set up cones in a zig-zag pattern 10 yards apart. DEs will start at the first cone, then sprint to the second cone, and immediately change direction to the third cone. After completing the zig-zag pattern, DEs will perform a 3-step drop and then rush the quarterback. Coaches should emphasize 'quick feet' and 'aggressive hand placement' during the drill. This drill translates to game performance by teaching DEs to quickly change direction and explode off the edge, making it difficult for opposing linemen to block them. Aim for 3 sets of 5 reps, increasing speed and intensity with each set.
