At St. Xavier High School, head coach Kevin Wallace is known for pushing his running backs to new heights. One of his go-to drills for building speed and agility is the 'Cones and Cuts' exercise. Here's how to run it: Set up 5 cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Start at the first cone, then make a sharp cut to the second cone, followed by a quick change of direction to the third cone. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues: 'Keep your head up, stay low, and explode out of each cut.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a RB's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate out of cuts, making them a more elusive and effective runner.
