Unlocking Tight End Potential: The 'Route Box' Drill
At 4A powerhouses like John Curtis Patriots, tight ends are often the difference-makers in big games. To take their skills to the next level, we recommend incorporating the 'Route Box' drill into your summer training program. This drill focuses on quick releases, precise footwork, and reliable hands. Set up a 10x10 grid on the field, with cones marking each square. Players start at the center square and must quickly release to one of the four corners, using a specific route (e.g., out, in, post). After releasing, they must immediately cut back to the center square and repeat. Aim for 3 sets of 12 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet,' 'square shoulders,' and 'catch with your eyes.' By mastering the 'Route Box' drill, tight ends will be better equipped to create separation and make plays in game situations.
