Defensive Back Drill: 'The Shadow'
The 'Shadow' drill is a valuable tool for 4A cornerbacks like those at John Curtis Patriots, helping them develop the quickness and agility needed to stay with receivers in man-to-man coverage. The drill involves two players, a defender and a receiver, who start at the line of scrimmage. On the snap, the defender must quickly close the distance and get their inside shoulder on the receiver, staying 'in their shadow' as they run. The defender should focus on keeping their eyes on the receiver's outside shoulder and using their hips to generate torque. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by allowing cornerbacks to develop the ability to quickly close gaps and stay with receivers, making it an essential addition to any cornerback's training regimen.
