FridayNightPulse: 'Trench' Drill for 4A Linebackers

๐Ÿ“ John Curtis PatriotsยทSunday, July 12, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At 4A powerhouses like John Curtis Patriots, linebackers must be prepared to dominate in the trenches. To improve their tackling and shedding blocks, we recommend the 'Trench' drill. Set up a series of cones in a zig-zag pattern, with a defender and a blocker at each cone. The defender must tackle the blocker, then quickly shed the block and pursue the next cone. Start with 3 sets of 5 reps, focusing on explosive acceleration and agility. Coaching cues include 'get low' and 'attack the ball.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching linebackers to quickly identify and react to blocks, allowing them to stay in position and make tackles. By incorporating the 'Trench' drill into your pre-season training, your 4A linebackers will be ready to take on the toughest opponents.
