Elevate Your Route Running: A WR Drill for 5A Programs
As the Evangel Christian Eagles prepare for the upcoming season, wide receiver coach, Mark Thompson, emphasizes the importance of precise route running. To improve this skill, Thompson recommends the '5-Step Slant Drill.' Set up five cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. Have the WR start at the first cone, then run a 5-step drop, planting their outside foot at the second cone. From there, they should immediately transition into a slant route, cutting sharply at the third cone. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the quarterback,' 'inside foot first,' and 'explosive release.' This drill translates to game performance by improving WRs' ability to quickly change direction and create separation from defenders, making them a more effective threat in the passing game.
