Purple Knights' Pre-Season CB Drill: 'Shadow and Mirror' Technique

๐Ÿ“ St. Augustine Purple KnightsยทFriday, July 17, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the Purple Knights prepare for the upcoming 4A season, cornerbacks coach, Michael Thompson, emphasizes the importance of mastering the 'Shadow and Mirror' technique. This drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Players start in a defensive stance, with their eyes focused on the quarterback. The coach or trainer will then simulate a receiver's route, and the cornerback must 'shadow' the receiver, staying one step behind. Next, the cornerback must 'mirror' the receiver's movements, staying in sync with their footwork. Coaching cues include: 'Stay on their hip,' 'Mirror their steps,' and 'Stay one step behind.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the cornerback's ability to read and react to receivers' movements, ultimately leading to more interceptions and pass breakups.
