Speed and Agility Drill for S Players: Evangel Christian Eagles' Pre-Season Prep
The Evangel Christian Eagles' coaching staff has identified a key area for improvement in their 5A program's secondary: speed and agility. To address this, they've implemented a drill that targets quick changes of direction, acceleration, and deceleration. The 'L-Shape Drill' involves setting up two cones 5 yards apart, with a third cone 10 yards away. Players start at the first cone, sprint to the second, then quickly change direction to accelerate towards the third cone. They should reach top speed in 3-4 yards and maintain it for 5 yards. Complete 3 sets of 5 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'explosive out of the turn' and 'drive through the finish.' This drill translates to game performance by improving reaction time, allowing S players to stay with receivers on deep routes and close gaps on the edge.
