Improving Footwork for 5A OL: The 'Pillar Shuffle' Drill
For 5A programs like Evangel Christian Eagles, developing strong footwork is crucial for linemen to effectively block and tackle. The 'Pillar Shuffle' drill targets the quick changes of direction and lateral movement that OL players need to excel. Set up four pillars or cones in a square formation, with each pillar 5 yards apart. Players start at one pillar and perform a 3-step shuffle to the adjacent pillar, then immediately change direction and shuffle to the next pillar. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps in each direction. Coaching cues include: 'Keep your feet light and quick,' 'Focus on your inside foot,' and 'Drive through the ground.' This drill translates to game performance by improving OL players' ability to quickly react to defensive stunts and maintain their position in the pocket.
