CB Lockdown Drill: Xaverian Brothers Hawks' Summer Prep
At top Div I programs like the Xaverian Brothers Hawks, cornerbacks are taught a lockdown drill to improve their ability to stay with receivers. The drill involves a defender and receiver starting at the line of scrimmage, with the defender in a press position. The receiver runs a 5-yard out route, and the defender is tasked with staying with them, keeping their body between the receiver and the quarterback. The defender must not allow the receiver to get inside or outside leverage. The drill is performed for 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest in between. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the quarterback' and 'stay vertical.' This drill translates to game performance by teaching cornerbacks to stay disciplined and focused on their assignment, allowing them to make plays on the ball.
