Power Through Contact: Everett Crimson Tide's RB Drill
At the top Div I programs like Everett Crimson Tide, running backs are expected to be more than just ball carriers. They need to be physical, explosive, and capable of breaking tackles. To prepare for the physicality of high school football, Crimson Tide's coaching staff has implemented a drill to improve RBs' ability to power through contact. The drill, called 'Tackle Box,' involves 3 sets of 10 reps. Players start in a 3-point stance, then explode forward, aiming to hit a pad or sled 5 yards downfield. As they approach, coaches provide cues to 'drive through' the pad, keeping their shoulders square and their weight in their heels. This drill translates to game performance by teaching RBs to maintain their balance and generate power through their lower half, allowing them to break tackles and gain extra yards.
