Explosive Power for RBs: The St. John's Prep 'Box Drill'
At Div I programs like St. John's Prep, running back coaches are always looking for ways to improve their players' explosive power and acceleration. One effective drill to achieve this is the 'Box Drill.' Players start in a 3-point stance, then explosively jump onto a box or bench (approximately 12-18 inches high) and immediately change direction, landing softly on both feet. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'jump, not step,' and 'land softly, like a cat.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a RB's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate out of cuts, making them a more elusive and effective runner. By incorporating the Box Drill into their training, RBs can develop the power and agility needed to dominate on the field this season.
