DeMatha Catholic Stags Linebacker Drill: 'Shut Down the Gate'

๐Ÿ“ DeMatha Catholic StagsยทMonday, July 27, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

To improve tackling and pursuit skills, DeMatha Catholic Stags linebackers will focus on the 'Shut Down the Gate' drill during summer camp. This drill involves a series of 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Players will start in a 3-point stance, then explosively close the 'gate' by tackling a blocking sled or teammate. Key coaching cues include: 'Close the gate!' and 'Finish the play!' This drill translates to game performance by teaching linebackers to quickly close the distance and make tackles in space. It also improves their ability to pursue ballcarriers and make plays in the open field.
