Squeeze and Slide: A Drill to Improve Leavitt Hornets OL Footwork
The Squeeze and Slide drill is a valuable addition to any B-program's offseason training regimen. This exercise targets the quick footwork and agility required for linemen to effectively block and pursue in a game. To run the drill, set up a series of cones in a zig-zag pattern, approximately 5 yards apart. Divide the OL into pairs, with one player as the blocker and the other as the defender. The blocker must 'squeeze' through the cones, keeping their feet shoulder-width apart and their weight centered. As they exit the cones, the defender must 'slide' to the side, mimicking a defensive lineman's pursuit. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the OL's ability to quickly change direction and maintain their position in space.
