Building Power and Speed: The Yarmouth Clippers' RB Power Shuttle Drill
The Yarmouth Clippers' coaching staff has developed a drill to help running backs build power and speed, essential for success in the MPA playoffs. The RB Power Shuttle Drill consists of 3 sets of 5 reps: 1) Start in a 3-point stance, explode into a 10-yard sprint, then immediately change direction and accelerate back to the starting point. 2) From the starting point, jump onto a box or bench (12-18 inches high), then quickly step down and repeat the sprint. 3) From the starting point, perform a lateral shuffle to the right, then quickly change direction and shuffle to the left. Coaching cues include 'explosive' and 'aggressive' starts, and 'quick' changes of direction. This drill translates to game performance by improving acceleration, deceleration, and change of direction, key components of a running back's game.
