Crash Course for C-Program Tight Ends: The Y-Hook Drill
For tight ends at smaller programs like the Yarmouth Clippers, developing reliable hands and route-running skills is crucial. The Y-Hook drill is designed to improve these areas. Set up a 10-yard line with a coach or trainer at the 5-yard line. Players will start at the 10-yard line and run a 5-yard hook route, turning sharply at the 5-yard line. The coach will throw a 5-yard out to the tight end, who must catch the ball with their hands and quickly turn upfield. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 2-minute rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'eyes on the quarterback' and 'catch with your hands, not your body.' This drill translates to game performance by replicating the quick decision-making and ball skills required in a tight end's role. By mastering the Y-Hook, tight ends can become a reliable target for their quarterbacks.
