FridayNightPulse: Building Elite RBs with the 'Staggered Shuttle' Drill
At top programs like Cheverus High School's Stags, running backs are held to a high standard. To develop elite speed and agility, Stags' coach, Tom Austin, utilizes the 'Staggered Shuttle' drill in pre-season training. The drill consists of three sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Players line up 10 yards apart, with two cones at the 5-yard mark. On the whistle, players sprint to the cone, then immediately change direction and shuttle back to their starting point. Key coaching cues include 'explosive acceleration' and 'aggressive footwork.' This drill translates to game performance by improving RBs' ability to quickly change direction and accelerate through holes, making them more elusive to defenders. The staggered setup also simulates game-like scenarios, where RBs must rapidly adjust to changing blocking schemes and defensive alignments.
