Sprint to Success: Davison Cardinals' Speed Training Drill for S Players

The S players at top Div 1 programs like the Davison Cardinals know that speed is key to outmaneuvering opponents on the field. To improve acceleration and reaction time, Coach Thompson recommends the following drill: 3 sets of 10 reps of 'Shuttle Sprints with Change of Direction'. Players start at a line 10 yards away from a cone, sprint to the cone, then immediately change direction to sprint back to the starting line. Focus on explosive acceleration out of the start and quick changes of direction. Coaching cues include 'Fast feet, fast hands' and 'Change direction, don't slow down'. This drill translates to game performance by improving S players' ability to quickly close gaps and cover receivers in man-to-man coverage.
