Unlocking Tight End Potential: The 'Chain Reaction' Drill
At the high school level, tight ends play a crucial role in a team's offense. To improve their performance, coaches at Division 2 programs like Muskegon Big Reds are incorporating the 'Chain Reaction' drill into their training regimen. This drill focuses on the tight end's ability to release from a lineman and create separation from a defender. To set up, pair a tight end with a lineman and a defender. The lineman will block the defender, allowing the tight end to release and sprint 10 yards downfield. The tight end will then change direction and sprint back to the starting point. Repeat for 3 sets of 5 reps. Coaching cues include 'release the chain' and 'create space.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the tight end's ability to quickly release from a block and create separation from a defender, making them a more effective target for the quarterback.
