Summer WR Training: King's 'Cone Crunch' Drill
At Detroit King Crusaders, one of the top Division 2 programs in the state, receivers coach Jamal Anderson emphasizes the importance of route running precision and speed. To improve these skills, Anderson has developed a drill he calls the 'Cone Crunch.' This high-intensity workout targets the quick changes of direction and foot speed necessary for success in the MHSAA playoffs. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Players start at the 5-yard line, sprinting to the 10-yard cone, then quickly changing direction to the 5-yard cone, and finally back to the starting point. Coaches should emphasize proper footwork and body positioning throughout the drill. The 'Cone Crunch' translates to game performance by improving a receiver's ability to quickly get in and out of breaks, creating separation from defenders.
