Speed and Agility for S Players: The 5-10-5 Shuttle Drill
At Div 2 programs like Muskegon Big Reds, speed and agility are crucial for S players to excel in coverage and make game-changing plays. To improve their quickness and reaction time, coaches can implement the 5-10-5 shuttle drill. This drill consists of three parts: a 5-yard sprint, a 10-yard change of direction, and another 5-yard sprint. Have the player start at one end of the 20-yard line, sprint to the 15-yard line, then quickly change direction and sprint back to the 25-yard line. Repeat for 3 sets of 5 reps. Coaching cues include: 'Fast feet, quick turns,' and 'Change direction on a dime.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing S players to develop the speed and agility needed to stay with receivers and make tackles in space. It also improves reaction time and decision-making under pressure.
