Raiders' CB Drill: 'Shadow and Mirror'
Cretin-Derham Hall's secondary coach, Mike Johnson, has a go-to drill for his top cornerbacks: 'Shadow and Mirror'. This high-intensity exercise targets quick reactions, footwork, and spatial awareness. The drill involves two players: a 'shadow' and a 'mirror'. The shadow player starts 5 yards off the receiver's line, while the mirror player lines up directly with the receiver. The coach throws a pass, and the shadow player must react and cover the receiver, while the mirror player mirrors the receiver's every move. The drill is done for 3 sets of 5 reps, with a 2-minute rest in between. Coaching cues include 'stay on their hip' and 'mirror their body language'. This drill translates to game performance by teaching cornerbacks to anticipate and react to receivers' moves, while also staying disciplined in coverage.
