Panthers' WR Prep: Route Running Precision
At Lakeville North Panthers' summer camp, wide receiver coach Mike Johnson emphasizes the importance of precise route running. To improve this skill, Johnson recommends the 'Route Box Drill'. Divide the field into 10-yard boxes, with each box representing a different route (slant, out, in, etc.). Have WRs start at the line, then sprint to the first box, making a precise cut to the designated route. They'll then sprint to the next box, repeating the process. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps for each route, focusing on quick footwork and accurate cuts. Coaching cues include 'stay low', 'keep your eyes up', and 'make the cut at the hash'. This drill translates to game performance by improving WRs' ability to quickly read defenses and make sharp cuts, creating separation from defenders.
