Eagles' Eyes on the Prize: CB Drill for 6A Success
As the 2026 season approaches, cornerbacks at top-tier programs like Eden Prairie Eagles are gearing up for a challenge. To improve reaction time and ball skills, Coach Thompson recommends the 'Shadow and React' drill. Set up a 10-yard zone with a receiver at the 5-yard line and a quarterback at the 10-yard line. In sets of 3 reps, have the CB start in a backpedal, then quickly transition to a forward lean when the QB snaps the ball. The CB must 'shadow' the receiver, staying close, and react to the ball in the air. Coaching cues: 'Stay soft, stay fluid, and react to the ball.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to stay with receivers in man coverage and make plays on the ball. Run 3 sets of 3 reps, 3 times a week, for optimal results.
