Way to Go: Tight End Training for 6A Programs
The tight end position is a crucial component of any high-powered 6A offense, and Wayzata Trojans head coach, Joe Sanchez, emphasizes the importance of developing their TEs through a series of targeted drills. One such drill, the 'Route Running Box Drill,' is designed to improve a TE's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate out of cuts. The drill involves setting up a 10x10 foot box with cones and having the TE start at one corner. Coaches will call out a series of routes, such as a 5-yard out or a 10-yard in, and the TE must run the route, focusing on quick footwork and sharp cuts. Perform 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaches can provide cues such as 'quick feet, tight turns' to emphasize the importance of agility and explosiveness.
