FridayNightPulse: Developing Elite Defensive Ends
This summer, 6A programs like Elk River Elks are focusing on building speed and agility in their defensive ends through a series of plyometric exercises. The 'Box Jumps with Lateral Shuffles' drill is a key component of this training program. Players will start at a box or bench 12-18 inches high, then explosively jump onto the box before immediately shuffling 5-7 yards to the side. They will repeat this process for 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'explode off the ground' and 'stay low and balanced.' This drill translates to game performance by improving a defensive end's ability to quickly change direction and chase down ball carriers. It also enhances their power and explosiveness off the line of scrimmage.
