CB Clinic: 3-Step Backpedal Drill
This summer, Christian Brothers College Cadets, Park Hill South Panthers, Blue Springs Wildcats, Rockhurst Hawklets, and St. Louis University High Jr. Bills are perfecting their coverage skills with a 3-Step Backpedal Drill. The drill targets quick, efficient backpedals, essential for press coverage and zone drops. CBs will perform 3 sets of 5 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Start in a 5-yard alignment, then backpedal 3 steps, planting the outside foot and transferring weight onto it. Next, take a 1-step shuffle to the outside, keeping the back foot planted. Finally, explode into a 3-yard close, keeping the eyes on the quarterback. Coaches should emphasize proper footwork and body positioning. This drill translates to game performance by allowing CBs to quickly close on receivers and maintain a tight, physical presence in coverage.
