Fine-Tuning Route Running with the '5-Cut Drill'

๐Ÿ“ Hazelwood Central HawksยทThursday, July 30, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For wide receivers looking to improve their route running and separation from defenders, the '5-Cut Drill' is a valuable addition to any pre-season training regimen. At programs like Hazelwood Central Hawks, Hazelwood West Hawks, Francis Howell Vikings, Parkway North Vikings, Parkway South Patriots, and Lindbergh Flyers, coaches are incorporating this drill to enhance their receivers' abilities. The drill consists of five different cuts: in, out, up, down, and across. Perform each cut for 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on quick footwork and precise body positioning. Coaching cues include 'inside foot to the ground' for the in-cut and 'keep your eyes up' for the up-cut. This drill translates to game performance by allowing receivers to develop the agility and decision-making skills necessary to create separation from defenders and make plays down the field.
