Developing the Elite Lineman: Starkville Yellow Jackets' Summer OL Drill
The Starkville Yellow Jackets' 6A program is known for its dominant front line, and a key component of their offseason training is the 'Double-Team Block' drill. This exercise focuses on developing the strength, technique, and coordination necessary for successful double-team blocking. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest period between sets. Players line up in a 3-point stance, with a partner positioned 5 yards away. On the coach's signal, the players explode forward, executing a double-team block. Coaching cues include 'Hands up, eyes up, and drive!' and 'Finish with your feet!' This drill translates to game performance by improving the ability of OL players to work together as a unit, creating holes for the running back and protecting the quarterback from the pass rush.
