Warrior Wideouts: Mastering the '5-10-5' Drill
As the Oak Grove Warriors prepare for the upcoming 6A season, wide receiver coach, Ryan Thompson, emphasizes the importance of speed, agility, and route-running precision. To address these key areas, Thompson's team will be implementing the '5-10-5' drill during summer training. The drill involves setting up five cones in a zig-zag pattern, with the first cone 5 yards from the starting point, the second 10 yards from the first, and the third 5 yards from the second. Players must sprint to the first cone, change direction, and accelerate to the second cone, then decelerate and change direction again before accelerating to the third cone. This drill translates to game performance by improving a WR's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate off the line of scrimmage, allowing them to gain separation from defenders. Coaches should aim for 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets.
