Game-Changing CB Drill for 6A Programs: 'The Shuffle and Mirror'
As the 2026 season approaches, cornerbacks at 6A programs like Madison Central Jaguars need to be prepared to handle the speed and agility of their opponents. One effective drill to improve CBs' reaction time and coverage skills is the 'Shuffle and Mirror'.
This drill involves two players: a receiver and a cornerback. The receiver starts at the line of scrimmage, while the cornerback begins 5 yards off the line. On the snap, the receiver runs a 5-yard out route. The cornerback shuffles their feet to maintain depth, then mirrors the receiver's movements, staying one step behind. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues include: 'Shuffle, don't slide' and 'Mirror, don't reach'. This drill translates to game performance by improving CBs' ability to stay with receivers on out routes and maintain proper depth.
