Explosive Route Running for 6A WRs: The 'L-Drill'

๐Ÿ“ Olive Branch ConquistadorsยทWednesday, July 22, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At the top 6A programs like Olive Branch Conquistadors, wide receivers need to be explosive and precise in their route running. To improve this, Coach Thompson recommends the 'L-Drill'. Set up three cones in an 'L' shape, with the top cone 5 yards from the bottom two. Players start at the top cone, then sprint to the bottom left cone, making a sharp cut back to the top cone. They then repeat the process on the right side. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'eyes on the target'. This drill translates to game performance by improving a WR's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate out of breaks, making them a more elusive and effective target for their quarterback. By incorporating the 'L-Drill' into their summer training, 6A WRs can gain a competitive edge.
