Shedding Blocks: A S-Coverage Drill for West Point Green Wave
The S-coverage drill is a crucial component of any 5A program's defensive training regimen. At West Point, we're focusing on developing our S-players' ability to shed blocks and maintain coverage. The drill is as follows: Set up four cones in a square formation, with two cones 5 yards apart and two cones 7 yards apart. The S-player starts at the 5-yard cone and the blocker starts at the 7-yard cone. On the whistle, the blocker attempts to block the S-player, who must shed the block and maintain coverage on the quarterback. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'keep your head up,' 'stay low,' and 'explosive hands.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the S-player's ability to quickly shed blocks and maintain coverage, allowing them to make plays on the ball. By incorporating this drill into our training regimen, we're confident that our S-players will be better equipped to handle the physicality of 5A football.
