FridayNightPulse: Conquistadors CBs Get Ready for Season with 'Shadow' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Olive Branch ConquistadorsยทThursday, July 30, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

Cornerbacks at 6A programs like Olive Branch Conquistadors need to be quick, agile, and able to read the quarterback's eyes. To improve these skills, Coach Thompson recommends the 'Shadow' drill. Set up four cones in a zigzag pattern 5 yards apart. Have the CB start at the first cone and sprint to the second, then backpedal to the third, and finally cut to the fourth cone. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps. Coaching cues: 'Shadow the receiver, don't the ball' and 'Keep your eyes on the quarterback's eyes.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the CB's ability to stay with receivers and read the quarterback's intentions. It also simulates the quick changes of direction that occur on the field.
