Speed and Agility for AA S Players: The 'Sprint to Crossover' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Missoula Sentinel SpartansยทSunday, July 5, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At top AA programs like Missoula Sentinel Spartans, speed and agility are crucial components of a successful secondary unit. To improve these skills, we recommend incorporating the 'Sprint to Crossover' drill into your summer training regimen. This drill targets the quick change of direction and acceleration necessary for S players to stay with receivers down the field. To set up the drill, divide the players into pairs with one player as the 'receiver' and the other as the 'cornerback.' The receiver starts at a 5-yard line, while the cornerback lines up at the 10-yard line. On the whistle, the receiver sprints down the sideline, then suddenly cuts across the field, forcing the cornerback to change direction and pursue. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on proper footwork and body positioning. This drill translates to game performance by allowing S players to develop the quick reactions and agility necessary to stay with receivers in man coverage.
