Explosive Power for Running Backs: The Box Drill
At AA programs like the Butte Bulldogs, running backs need to be explosive and powerful to break through tackles and gain extra yards. One effective drill to improve this is the Box Drill. This drill targets the glutes, hamstrings, and quads, which are essential for running back performance. To run the Box Drill, set up three cones in a triangular formation, with the player starting at one end. The coach or trainer will then place a medicine ball in the center of the box. The player must explosively jump into the box, landing on both feet, and then immediately jump out, using the medicine ball for added resistance. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'Explode into the box' and 'Drive through the ground.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the player's ability to quickly change direction and generate power at the point of contact.
