Sprint to Success: A Speed Drill for 4A S Players

๐Ÿ“ Grimsley WhirliesยทSaturday, July 4, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the 2026 season approaches, 4A programs like Grimsley Whirlies are fine-tuning their speedsters. To improve acceleration and reaction time, Coach Thompson recommends the 'Sprint Shuttle' drill. Set up two cones 10 yards apart, with a third cone 5 yards beyond the second. S players start at the first cone, sprint to the second, then quickly change direction and sprint back to the first cone. After 3 sets of 5 reps, add a twist: place a small ball or marker on the ground at the second cone. Players must pick up the object and immediately sprint to the third cone. This drill translates to game performance by simulating the quick changes of direction and reaction time required to cover receivers and respond to quarterback scrambles.
