Kicker Prep: Building Power and Accuracy with the 'Step-Up' Drill
As the Grimsley Whirlies prepare for the upcoming 4A season, special teams coach, Mike Smith, emphasizes the importance of building power and accuracy for their kickers. One drill that has seen significant results is the 'Step-Up' drill. This drill targets the key muscles needed for a strong kick, including the glutes, hamstrings, and calves. To perform the drill, kickers will set up 10-15 yards from a target, with a step-up platform or bench in front of them. They will perform 3 sets of 10 reps, stepping up onto the platform with one foot and immediately kicking the ball. Coaching cues include 'drive through your plant foot' and 'follow through with your kicking leg.' This drill translates to game performance by building explosive power and accuracy, allowing kickers to reach higher trajectory and greater distance.
