Building a Dominant Line: Myers Park Mustangs' OL Drill
The Myers Park Mustangs' 4A football program is gearing up for another strong season, and their offensive line is a key component. To improve their strength, agility, and technique, the Mustangs' coaching staff has implemented a drill that targets the linemen's ability to explode off the ball and seal the edge. The drill, known as the 'Power Step Drill,' involves three sets of 10 reps. Players start in a three-point stance, then explosively step to the side with their outside foot, keeping their inside foot planted. As they step, they focus on driving their outside foot into the ground and extending their arms to seal the edge. Coaches provide cues such as 'step, drive, extend' to emphasize the proper technique. This drill translates to game performance by improving the linemen's ability to quickly react to defensive schemes and secure the edge.
