Explosive Power for 3A Running Backs: The Weddington Warriors' Wedge Drill
The Wedge Drill is a high-intensity exercise designed to improve running backs' ability to accelerate and break tackles in the open field. At Weddington High School, our coaching staff uses this drill to prepare our 3A running backs for the physical demands of Friday night football. The drill consists of 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds of rest between sets. Players start in a three-point stance, then explosively drive their feet into the ground, keeping their knees bent and weight forward. As they drive, they focus on 'wedge' their hands into the ground, generating power and speed. This drill translates to game performance by improving running backs' ability to quickly change direction and break tackles, making them more effective in the open field.
