FridayNightPulse: LB Drills for 4A Success

๐Ÿ“ Grimsley WhirliesยทTuesday, July 28, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For Linebackers at 4A programs like Grimsley Whirlies, a key area of focus this pre-season is agility and reaction time. To improve, Coach Thompson recommends the 'Ladder Shuffle Drill'. Set up a ladder with 5-6 rungs and have players start in a 3-point stance. On the whistle, they must quickly move through the ladder, shuffling their feet from one rung to the next. Perform 3 sets of 20 reps, resting for 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'stay low'. This drill translates to game performance by improving a LB's ability to quickly close gaps and change direction. It also enhances their reaction time, allowing them to anticipate and react to opposing ball carriers.
