Route Running Drills for Wide Receivers at AA Programs

๐Ÿ“ Mandan BravesยทTuesday, July 21, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

As the summer heat sets in, AA programs like the Mandan Braves are honing in on their wide receiver skills with a focus on precise route running. One effective drill to implement is the 'High-Low' route combo. Divide the receivers into pairs, with one player as the 'X' receiver and the other as the 'Y' receiver. Set up a 10-yard grid with cones. The 'X' receiver starts at the top of the grid, while the 'Y' receiver begins at the bottom. On the coach's signal, the 'X' receiver sprints to the top of the grid, then immediately cuts to the 'Y' receiver's location, who has released to the high-low route. Repeat for 3 sets of 5 reps. Coaching cues include 'quick feet' and 'eyes on the quarterback.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the receiver's ability to read coverage and create separation in tight spaces.
