Burke Bulldogs Tight End Drill: 'Chain Reaction'
At Omaha Burke, our tight ends are always looking for ways to improve their route-running and separation skills. This summer, we're incorporating a drill we call 'Chain Reaction.' It's a 3-part exercise that simulates game-like scenarios and forces our TEs to think on their feet. First, we set up 3-4 cones in a zig-zag pattern, 5 yards apart. The TE starts at the first cone, then runs a 5-yard out route, cutting sharply at the second cone. Next, they change direction, running a 5-yard in route, cutting at the third cone. Finally, they release and run a 10-yard deep route, cutting at the fourth cone. We do 3 sets of 10 reps, focusing on quick feet, sharp cuts, and proper release. This drill translates to game performance by teaching our TEs to quickly change direction and separate from defenders.
