Unlocking Separation: A WR Drill for B-Programs

๐Ÿ“ Kearney BearcatsยทSunday, July 12, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

For wide receivers at programs like Kearney Bearcats, developing the ability to separate from defenders is key to success. To improve this skill, try the 'High-Low Release' drill. Set up two cones 5 yards apart, with a defender's pad or a tackling pad positioned between them. Have the receiver start at the top cone, then sprint to the bottom cone, releasing the ball at the defender's pad. Focus on a high release (shoulder and elbow at 90 degrees) and a low release (ball at hip level). Complete 3 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets. Coaching cue: 'High and tight, low and loose.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the receiver's ability to create separation and get open against press coverage.
