Boosting Kickoff Coverage with the 'Sprint to the Ball' Drill

๐Ÿ“ Lincoln East SpartansยทFriday, July 31, 2026ยทFridayNightPulse Insider

At top programs like Lincoln East Spartans, kick coverage units are a key factor in determining success. To improve their speed and reaction time, coaches are implementing the 'Sprint to the Ball' drill. This high-intensity exercise targets the explosiveness and agility of kick return specialists. The drill involves setting up cones in a zig-zag pattern, 10 yards apart. Players start at the first cone, sprinting to the second, then immediately changing direction to the third, and so on. Perform 3 sets of 10 reps, with 30 seconds rest between sets. Coaching cues include 'drive through the cone' and 'stay low and quick.' This drill translates to game performance by allowing players to develop the ability to quickly change direction and accelerate to the ball, making them more effective in coverage.
