Summer Speed and Agility for WRs: Exeter Blue Hawks' Pro-Route Drill
For Div II WRs looking to improve their separation and speed, the Exeter Blue Hawks' pro-route drill is a game-changer. This drill targets the WR's ability to quickly change direction and accelerate off the line. To set up: divide the group into pairs with one WR and one DB. The WR starts at the line, the DB at 5 yards depth. On the coach's whistle, the WR runs a 5-yard pro route, focusing on a 45-degree cut. The DB mirrors the WR's movement. After 3 sets of 10 reps, switch roles and repeat. Coaching cues: 'Fast feet, quick hands,' and 'Drive through the cut.' This drill translates to game performance by improving the WR's ability to quickly separate from defenders and create separation. It also enhances their ability to read coverage and adjust their route on the fly.
