Route Running Precision: A Pre-Season Drill for WRs
At top-tier programs like Manchester Central Little Green, receivers are constantly working on their route running skills. One effective drill to improve precision is the '5-Yard Box Drill'. Set up a 5-yard square box with cones or markers. Divide the receivers into pairs, with one player as the receiver and the other as the quarterback. The receiver starts at one corner of the box, while the QB stands at the opposite corner. On the whistle, the QB throws a quick out route to the receiver, who must catch the ball within the box. The receiver must also maintain a specific depth and speed, as indicated by the coach. Repeat for 3 sets of 10 reps, with a 30-second rest between sets. This drill translates to game performance by improving the receiver's ability to read the QB and adjust to the ball in traffic.
